September 4, 2015
Join us in September 2015 as Lourdes celebrates 99 years of faith-based healthcare.
On September 24, 1916, six Sisters of St. Joseph from Lewiston, Idaho, together with very dedicated physicians and citizens from Pasco, opened a Catholic hospital on Fifth Avenue. The Sisters named this small two-story hotel “Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital” in honor of Mary, the Mother of God, who had obtained many favors especially healings in Lourdes, France. This hotel served as temporary quarters and as the Mid-Columbia’s first hospital. This arrangement lasted six years until the present north wing of Lourdes Medical Center was completed in 1922.
Birthdays are wonderful celebrations where we remember the beginnings and the growth of a person and/or organization. Lourdes Health Network is still growing and changing as administration, board members and physicians assess programs and services and determine how best to meet the needs of the people we serve.
As we celebrate our Birthday, let us thank God for the courage and zeal of the first Sisters of St. Joseph and their dedicated partners. Let us also pray that the pioneer spirit of those early years continues to live and thrive in each of us. Thursday, September 24th will be the day we celebrate Lourdes Birthday.
